THE HEALTH OF A PASSION AND SOIR-FAIRE D’EXCEPTION DEPUIS 1924

While he was forty years old, Etienne Fabre made a decision that would not only change his life but also that of his descendants: he would become Gantier. The legacy of Maison Fabre as a glove goes further than the foundation of the company. In 1909, Etienne Fabre then 25 years old was passionate about horse riding to the point of committing to become a Mounted Police. At the time, horses, horse cars, bicycles, boats and trains are the main modes of transport and everyone then has a pair of gloves: it is the revelation and the beginning of a family history that continues to write.

LA GENÈSE

The story began in Millau (Aveyron) in 1924. Etienne Fabre, Master Gantier, founded his glovery business. At first he cuts the leathers with his brother. Some stings take home work.

BLANCS GANTS

As early as 1928, the glove craftsman specializes in white gloves on the goat and the work is articulated on the 3 floors of the family home where cutters and stings gradually take their place. Etienne Fabre quickly became a renowned craftsman in his aveyronnais workshop. This is how his career began in an artisanal sector that requires some rare skills and know-how.

THE 2TH GENERAL,
TRANSFORMATION

Twenty-two years later his son Denis and his daughter-in-law Rose joined the gantry. Multiplying travel, in order to make known her gloves around the world, Rose, dynamic and enterprising, quickly transforms her husband's glovery into a flourishing business. It creates models for the Maisons de Haute-Couture in Paris and shows a lot of imagination by transforming this necessary accessory into a refined product. It moves the factory and permanently installs it in the heart of Millau, where it is always, and counts up to 350 people in the 1950s.

THE 4TH GENERATION, THE FUTURE

Animated by the same family passion, Olivier Fabre left his journalism school to join his brother Jean-Marc in the Maison. Together, they continue the work initiated by their grandmother Rose and their father Louis and contribute to the new development of the family business. This date marks a new turning point for the gantry: The two brothers then plunge into the archives of the House and give new blood to the brand by appealing to many creators on Paris. These exceptional collaborations gradually associate Maison Fabre as one of the world references.

CONSECRATION ARTISANALE

In 2013, Maison Fabre was awarded the prestigious EPV Corporate Heritage label Living by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

THE HANDS OF THE 7th art

In almost a hundred years, Maison Fabre also acquired his nobility letters with cinema. The Millavoise company will create in 1966, the rally gloves of Jean-Louis Trintignant in Claude Lelouch’s “A Man and a Woman” and the black velours mountain bike gloves of Steeve McQueen in “L’Affaire Thomas Crown”. Another anecdote, in 1965, during the filming in Lozère of "La Grande Vadrouille" by Gérard Oury, Madame de Funès had come to Millau to visit the gantry with the wife of the then Prime Minister, Claude Pompidou.

MAGICAL ASSESSMENT

“There is no chance, there are only appointments,” said Jean Cocteau. That the glove Olivier Fabre has settled under the arcades of the Palais Royal, in the heart of Paris, is certainly not a coincidence. In the example of the poet, he could only be drawn to this poetic and preserved enclave. During his childhood and his adolescence, his grandmother gave him the taste of beauty, perfection and wonderful. Seeing her work in Millau's famous gantry naturally instilled her desire to perpetuate family tradition. In elegant ambassadors of French know-how, its gloves are now on the world tour and are successful. With beautiful stories, Olivier Fabre was only able to be sensitive to the charm of La Belle and La Bête, a tale of Madame Leprince de Beaumont "where the fairies do not appear". The discovery of a “travel ribbon” - the sumptuous and nocturnal film by Cocteau - perpetuated enchantment

COUSU MAIN FOR Grace Kelly

In 1956, Maison Fabre made the gloves of Princess Grace Kelly on the occasion of her marriage, on 19 April, with Prince Rainier of Monaco on the Monegasque rock. The glovery also designed the white lamb and crochet gloves worn by Hollywood star on Alfred Hitchcock’s film, “La Main au Collet” . These gloves are still manufactured and marketed by Maison Fabre. Sixty years later, the team of the film Grace de Monaco released in 2014, appealed to Maison Fabre to make 20 pairs of gloves for actress Nicole Kidman who endorsed Grace Kelly’s role in cinema.

THE BLANCING GANTS OF THE Republican Guard

It had been twenty years since Maison Fabre last worked for the State. However, since 2019, two orders have already been placed by the Administration. Ninety-five years after its creation, this state commission allows the House to reconnect with its past. Indeed, in 1924, Etienne Fabre, then Mounted Police, opened his glove shop specializing in white gloves. It is always with pride that Maison Fabre makes 300 pairs of these washable white lambskin gloves each month for the gendarmes of the Republican Guard. “Millau” is the name of this glove paying homage to its birthplace, magnified by the six employees, a cutter and five stitchers from the Maison Fabre workshop.

THE LARZAC

ETHICAL AND SUSTAINABLE GANT, UN MODEL WHO UNIT THE FABRIQ WITH THE TOISON AND THE NOS CUTER LET'S GO

For more than ten years, many groups of sheep breeders have joined forces to prevent the wool from the fleeces of their flocks from being lost. Together, they are looking for solutions to take advantage of this essential annual production. Maison Fabre chose the wool of Lacaune sheep from breeders in the region for the creation of the Larzac glove. By using this high quality raw material, the glove maker and the breeders are reviving a tradition which lasted here until the 1960s. After shearing, washing and carding, the woolen cloth is woven from the fibers of the sheep. and Lacaune sheep distributed in Occitanie. The colors of this range of textiles, from darkest to lightest, have the particularity of being designed without dyeing in order to make the most of the natural shades of the fleeces. Lacaune lambskin is processed locally by Tannerie Pechdo in Millau with the greatest respect for European environmental standards. Maison Fabre has been established in the heart of Millau since 1924, it is one of the last five glove factories which perpetuate this heritage of quality. In the workshop, six seamstresses and a cutter work these exceptional leathers and this unique wool to create the “Larzac” model, the first 100% Occitanie model. Everyone has magical fingers and know-how that they learned from their elders.

UNDER JEAN AND CUIR LAINE LACAUNE BREBIS. UN GANT 100% LOCAL AND SUSTAINABLE OCCITANIA.

Maison Fabre joins with the oldest Jean manufacturer in France the ATLIER TUFFERY in Florac, in the heart of the Cevennes, to make a pair of gloves and a leather and wool mittens of local sheep. Wool is a fiber that grows continuously in our territory. The herders never stopped toning their sheep, thus participating in their well-being and health. The wool of our region, that of Lacaune ewes, which is known for their milk, was often abandoned, dumped or exported abroad. We therefore chose to work to revalue this local fibre. Today, the wool of the shepherds of the National Park of the Cévennes is sorted on the tonte yards and it is revalued 5 times better than the average price in France for the producers. It is an ultra local industry, where we follow the tooth, sorting, washing, filtering, weaving, up to the garment, all in Occitanie region. Maison Fabre x Atelier Tuffery created the FLORAC model for men and women in leather and jeans of local wool doubled in cashmere and the CEVENNES model, a Lacaune lamb leather mittens and wool jeans Unlined Lacaune.
